This classic hot chocolate recipe is rich, creamy and delicious.Hot Chocolate is really very easy to make and tastes just like in cafe shops. I have tried many versions of hot chocolate and this one is hands down the best. Using real dark or milk chocolate with less cocoa powder and cornflour slurry makes this drink extra creamy and delicious.

About Hot Chocolate Recipe
Chocolate is said to uplift any bad mood and yes this hot chocolate drink can do magic too. I usually buy compund chocolate for baking but this time when I saw this small bar of dark chocolate from my favorite brand thought to try it. And yes I am going to buy this more often.
This hot chocolate recipe is very simple with 3 easy steps
- Boil milk
- Add ingredients
- Stir and mix
Generally cornflour is mixed with water to make a slurry and used to thicken to get the creamy texture. But when I used it I always find an after taste so after few trials found that adding less of cornflour slurry and cocoa powder and more of chocolate does the trick.
Hot Chocolate Ingredients
- Milk – Use full fat milk for best results, no alternate to it.
- Cocoa powder – Use good quality unsweetened cocoa powder which has an intense chocolate flavour.
- Chocolate – Use good quality compound chocolate or even choc chips. You can use either dark chocolate or milk chocolate or a mix of both. I prefer dark chocolate.

Ingredients
- 1 cup full fat milk boiled
- 1 tablespoon coco powder
- 2 teaspoon sugar
- 1/4 cup dark chocolate
For cornflour slurry:
- 1/2 teaspoon cornflour
- 2 teaspoon water
Instructions
To begin with first add cornflour along with water.
Mix well to form a slurry without any lumps. Set aside.
Add milk to a sauce pan.I used boiled milk.
Next add cocoa powder to it.
Add sugar.
Whisk well.
Now add cornflour slurry.
Whisk well so that no lumps are formed.
Let it boil for few mins until slightly thick.
Now add dark chocolate, give a quick mix.
Boil for 2 mins.
Thick creamy and chocolatey hot chocolate ready.
Pour into serving mug and Serve!
Top it up with marshmallows and Serve Hot Chocolate hot!

Notes

Hot Chocolate Recipe Step by Step

Expert Tips

Variations
- You can skip cornflour slurry and add more of chocolate if you prefer. In that case for 1 cup milk add almost equal quantity of chocolate or atleast 3/4 cup chocolate.
- Lot more of chocolate I feel an overdose so this is perfect to have often too.
- In addition you can top hot chocolate with marshmallows or dust cocoa powder.
- You either use compound chocolate(chop into bits) or add chocolate chips too.
- You can add a dash of vanilla essence if you like.
- Use half and half of dark and milk chocolate in that case reduce a bit of sugar.

Getting the perfect hot chocolate recipe wasn’t that easy for me.I have already posted a version of Hot Chocolate but I wanted to get the exact flavour, color and taste which I tasted at ‘Hot Chocolate’ a Patsserie,Cafe shop here at Coimbatore. This recipe is easy and comes closer to it.
PinIngredients
Full fat Milk – 2 cups
Fresh Cream / Milk Powder – 1 tablespoon
Unsweetened Coco Powder – 3 teaspoon
Choco Shavings / Chips – 3 tablespoon
Vanilla Essence – 1/2 teaspoon
Sugar – 4 teaspoon
Method:
- First get ready with all your ingredients.Boil milk, let it cool down a bit then add fresh cream whisk it well.
Pin - Now add sugar,cocoa powder, whisk it well so that coco powder gets blended well.
Pin - Now add chocochips/chocolate shavings, let it boil.Keep mixing in low flame till the choco chips gets dissolved completely and the milk is slightly thick.Now add vanilla essence and bring it to a boil.Switch off and immediately pour in serving mugs and serve.Pin
Serve hot with a pinch of coco powder sprinkled !!Pin
Tips
- Don’t cook in high flame as there are chances for the cream to curdle so just boil in low / medium flame.
- Don’t heat the drink for more time, just when its about to boil whisk it.
- Good quality coco powder and choco chips is one of the important factors to get perfect hot chocolate.
- I used Weikfield coco powder for the first time and am loving it for the color and flavour.
- Fresh cream / milk powder is added to give thickness and a creamy texture to the drink, don’t skip it.
- I tell you hot chocolate and hot coco are entirely different in taste and texture.Hot chocolate is rich,creamy and slightly on the creamier side wherewas hot coco is just like milk in consistency.
- Hot chocolate should be made and served immediately.Reheating will change the taste and flavour of the drink.
- Adjust sweetness according to your taste.
- You can even mix everything and microwave it for a minute.
- If you like cinnamon flavour then add a pinch of it.
- If you prefer you can serve it along withmarshmallow but I prefered to replicate even the serving style just like in ‘Hot Chocolate’ so made it simple with just a sprinkle of coco powder.
- You can even use dark choco chips to get a more darker color and flavour.
Mocha Hot Chocolate
Ingredients
- 1 and 1/2cupsmilk
- 1teaspooninstant coffee powder
- 1tablespoonunsweetened coco powder
- 2teaspoonsugar
- 1tablespoonchoco chips
Method
- To a small bowl add coffee powder and sugar.Add 3 teaspoon milk to it to make a runny paste.
Pin - Mix well to form a runny paste,Set aside.To a sauce pan add milk to it.Boil it and simmer for 2 mins.
Pin - Add coffee mixture,coco powder and whisk well.
Pin - Add choco chips, mix well.Simmer for 2-3 mins and switch off.Serve hot!
